Henriques: Soft Shore, Intertidal Faunal Community Structure

چکیده

The effects of pollution (nutrient enrichment). and the presence of macrovegetation on the species diversity and density of large benthic fauna in the Manukau Harbour, Auckland, were studied by sampling eight soft shore, intertidal habitats. Pollution was found to reduce faunal density but to have only a slight effect on species diversity. The presence of dense meadows of the intertidal seaweed Gracilaria secundata var. pseudoflagellifera did not appear to affect the community structure of the underlying large benthic fauna greatly. However, species diversity of large benthic fauna was higher on both eelgrass (Zostera muelleri) flats and in mangrove (Avicennia resinifera) forests than in comparable nonvegetated habitats. Presence of mangroves also increased faunal density whereas eelgrass flats showed a slight decrease in density in relation to comparable nonvegetated habitats.

A comparative study on intertidal faunal biodiversity of selected beaches of Mumbai coast.

Comparative study has been done to examine the biodiversity and ecological status of the intertidal region of Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR), Bandstand and National Centre for Performing Arts (NCPA) rocky beaches in Mumbai, West coast of India. A total of 50 species of intertidal organisms were recorded from these shores. Shannon and Simpson's diversity index, Margalefs richness ...

Influence of sediment characteristics on the composition of soft-sediment intertidal communities in the northern Gulf of Mexico

Benthic infaunal communities are important components of coastal ecosystems. Understanding the relationships between the structure of these communities and characteristics of the habitat in which they live is becoming progressively more important as coastal systems face increasing stress from anthropogenic impacts and changes in climate. To examine how sediment characteristics and infaunal comm...

The role of habitat heterogeneity in structuring the community of intertidal free-living marine nematodes

The role of habitat complexity has been widely neglected in the study of meiofaunal community patterns. We studied the intertidal nematode community of a structurally complex macrotidal beach exhibiting contrasting microhabitats (sandbars and runnels) to understand the influence of environmental gradients and habitat heterogeneity in the community structure. We tested whether topographical comp...

Species coexistence and the superior ability of an invasive species to exploit a facilitation cascade habitat

Facilitation cascades generated by co-occurring foundation species can enhance the abundance and diversity of associated organisms. However, it remains poorly understood how differences among native and invasive species in their ability to exploit these positive interactions contribute to emergent patterns of community structure and biotic acceptance. On intertidal shorelines in New England, we...

Limpet grazing on a physically stressful Patagonian rocky shore

Many theories of consumer control of communities have come from studies conducted in relatively benign, temperate zone rocky intertidal systems. Here, we examine gastropod grazing and the maintenance of bare space on a dry, wind-swept rocky shore of Patagonia, Argentina. Two limpet species are the primary intertidal grazers. Siphonaria lessoni dominates mid and high intertidal zones, while Nace...
